Before rickrolling, 4chan users used misleading links that led to an image of a duck on wheels. In 2007, the same bait-and-switch structure was redirected to Rick Astley’s music video.
Guinness World Records identifies a March 29, 2007 link disguised as a Grand Theft Auto IV trailer as the first reported rickroll. The trick spread because any promised destination could become the setup.
The target is surprised, but also invited in
A good rickroll is usually low-stakes. The person who clicks loses a few seconds, recognizes the song, and can use the same trick later. That repeatability turns the target into the next distributor.
The music video is upbeat and immediately recognizable, which keeps the reveal playful. A harsher destination would make the same link trick feel like deception rather than a shared ritual.

A physical rickroll needs a reveal
A static title alone misses the mechanism. A package, fold, scan, or hidden panel could recreate expectation followed by recognition. The useful design story would document the reveal and how the community chose it.
